Winter

In my humble opinion, winter sucks for running. There's less light during the day, it's freezing outside, and the holidays appear with a to-do list a mile long. Despite all of that, my cute hubby has started training for the Shamrock Marathon in the spring, resulting in me me feeling all sorts of guilty, so I just might join him. We'll decide soon.

So in the meantime, I've been trying to hit the gym and bulk up for the 2009 running season. Ha. Bulk up. I have found that I really enjoy this cross training season, but I miss running dearly. Nothing replaces breathing in fresh air and pounding the pavement.

So what do you do during the dreary winter months? I know some of you are fighting snow and severe temps, so I won't complain too much. But I'd love to hear your strategies.

  1. Well, considering our "severe temps" means that we sometimes have to go running in *gasp* 40-degree weather, I guess I can't complain much. With my trustee head lamp, we have managed dark morning runs. I guess my only strategy is peer pressure. Plan a run with someone and then guilt yourself into showing up no matter how cold it is. (After the first freezing mile) you will never regret it.

  2. I'm such a wimp...I usually head to the gym for the dreaded treadmill running. (Mostly because it is so dark in the wee hours and I don't have anyone to run with.) I miss the outside...

  3. I'm with JP. I hit the dreadmill during the cold, but I will venture out for 40 deg with no wind - wind=burrr. This month I have pledged with a few others to run everyday in the month of December. So cold or not I have to run! or 40 lashes...

  4. My take - don't feel guilty, and let Jona relish in the same beauty of a support crew that you get from him. Unless your dying to run the marathon, trade places and let him feel how awesome it is to get to do the race and have his spouse there every few miles cheering him on. I think he would love it!

  5. I focus on the fact that it is simply mind over matter. As long as I protect my exposed body parts, nothing to worry about but where and when. I run with a headlamp and reflective vests at night through the neighborhood. I wear gloves cause I can't deal with cold hands or fingers. Then again NC doesn't have bad winters.
